What is Constipation and How to Treat It

Being constipated means that bowel movements are difficult or occur less frequently than usual. Everyone experiences this at some point in their life.

Constipation

is defined as having three or fewer bowel movements in a week, and the stool can be hard and dry. It can also be painful to have a bowel movement.

In most cases, constipation is short-lived and not serious. Constipation occurs when digested food spends too much time in the colon. This can be caused by a variety of factors, such as not drinking enough fluids, not eating enough fiber, certain medications, or a lack of physical activity. Stress and anxiety can also contribute to constipation. Fortunately, there are several ways to treat constipation.

Increasing your fluid intake and eating more fiber-rich foods can help to soften the stool and make it easier to pass. Exercise can also help to stimulate the digestive system and promote regularity. If these methods don't work, over-the-counter laxatives may be necessary. If you experience constipation for more than two weeks, it's important to speak with your doctor. They may recommend additional treatments or tests to determine the underlying cause of your constipation.
